JDL doesnt get much MMO coverage and rightly so cause they are all nearlly the same and but there is one upcoming 2D MMO which gets me tingled all over, introducing.. Glitch! Glitch is made by Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield's new game company called "Tiny Speck". Glitch is a puzzle-heavy, web-based social 2D-flash MMO built around sending players billions of years into the past to develop the optimistic future that today seems increasingly unlikely.
"The whole world was spun out of the imagination of 11 great giants, So you have to go back into the past, into the world of the giants' imaginations and grow...the number of things in the world, grow it in terms of physical dimensions, to make sure the future actually happens. So all the game play takes place in the past inside the world of the giants' imagination."
There would be typical RPG elements like quests, leveling up, an in-game economy and working socially with other players. To many Facebook players it may feel very similar but Glitch is aimed to be aimed in b/w hardcore and facebook players. The game takes a depth of simulation commonly found in Maxis's games. So, instead of having fights in the games there would be rival religious factions, economic and resource battles.
Players must complete quests, gain skills, grow, and make many different kinds of things with basic ingredients--from a cheese plate to a pickle to a fruit salad, for starters--and winding their way through an often Mario-esque world of various artistic styles, many of which can be thought of as being inside an individual giant's memories. There is no end-game or specific goals thus you can keep growing and be entertained for months. There are bunch of occupations you can choose from and e.g. to be master farmer you must learn multiple skills including animals and gardnering. There will be recipes, breeding, making wine for dead when u r dead from grapes and what not. The whole game being set in different giants imagination gives developer to experiment so much vairety in this collaborative sim that its head spinning.
The game will soon go into testing stage, more info will be available @ Glitch.com
